Coments on the condition:
Denier frappé sur un flan un peu court, mais complet des deux côtés. La surface du métal est très agréable, avec une patine grise et brillante, surtout au droit, mais quelques oxydations sont à noter (autour du cou au droit et en divers endroits du revers)

Obverse description : Tête à droite dans un double grènetis, un bandeau perlé dans les cheveux.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Croix entre deux annelets pointés, sommée d'un oiseau à droite, avec quatre globules sous son bec et trois globules sous chaque annelet ; le tout dans un double grènetis.

Commentary


Cet exemplaire est exactement du même type que le n° 293 de l'ouvrage de Metcalf (la référence dans le domaine). Il appartiendrait à la série J, type 85 (BIIIb). Les variantes qui s'en rapprochent ne seraient que des imitations ou dégénérescences de ce type initial. Cet exemplaire, légèrement décentré au droit montre un double grènetis, sans doute lui-même vestige d’une légende (cf. Coins of England n° 777).

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
