Monnaie sur un flan un peu court et épais, avec les types centrés et de frappe vigoureuse, avec une épaisse patine sombre

Obverse description : Tête barbare à droite, les cheveux hirsutes ; des lettres devant le visage, avec le nez (?) proéminent.

Reverse description : Annelet pointé entouré de quatre petits segments et d’un globule ; l’ensemble dans un carré perlé ; une croisette (?) à l’exergue.

Commentary


Ce sceat est d’un style très particulier, avec une tête bien reconnaissable, bien que traité dans le style des monnaies au porc-épique. Ce droit est identique à la monnaie E905 illustrée par T. Abramson ; cette dernière a été trouvée dans le Norfolk, à Watton. Le revers avec un gros annelet pointé se retrouve associé à ce type de portrait, sur les monnaies dites du “VERNVS groupe”.

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
