Historical background

ELINCOURT - JOHN III OF LUXEMBOURG

(1430-1441)

Jean was born in 1392 from the union of Jean de Luxembourg and Marguerite d'Enghien. He was appointed governor of Arras in 1414 then governor of Paris from 1418 to 1420. In 1430, he defended Compiègne which Joan of Arc was trying to take back. It was one of his vassals who captured the "Maid of Orléans". In 1435, he refused to sign the Treaty of Arras putting an end to the Franco-Burgundian conflict. He died in 1441, when Charles VII was planning to bring him to heel. His lands were confiscated and then returned, for life, to his nephew.
