Exemplaire sur un flan ovale, légèrement décentré au droit sur la légende, parfaitement centré au revers avec le grènetis complet. Beau portrait inhabituel de l’empereur. Joli revers de style fin. Patine grise superficielle avec des reflets dorés

Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé d'Élagabal à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Antoninus Augustus”, (L'empereur césar Antonin auguste).

Reverse legend : SALVS ANTONINI AVG.
Reverse description : Salus (la Santé) debout de face tournée à droite, drapée, tenant une patère de la main gauche et nourrissant un serpent qu'elle tient de la main droite.
Reverse translation : “Salus Antonini Augusti”, (La Santé d’Antonin auguste).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Normalement, le buste est seulement lauré et drapé pour ce type. C’est la première fois que nous proposons à la vente un exemplaire avec les ptéryges visibles.

Proclaimed emperor on May 16, 218, Elagabalus, sole august until the end of June or the beginning of July, left Syria to join Rome. Elagabalus stops at Nicomedia. He spent the whole winter there and fell ill. It was therefore in this city that he took up his second consulship. Elagabal will not arrive in Rome until July or September 219, bringing the black stone of his cult to install him in his capital. He will never return to Syria, quickly assassinated after an unequaled reign of turpitude and disorder.
