Historical background

EDUENS, ÆDUI / ARVERNI, UNSPECIFIED

(1st century BC)

This so-called Siaugues-Saint-Romain series is more complex than it appears and it is difficult to present an exhaustive study of it due to the advanced state of corrosion of most of the known examples. A concentration of these coins can be observed in lower Allier, around Vichy (...). The geographical distribution of the coins makes them a local coinage. It could correspond to a coinage of pagus, whose territory would extend into the protruding space described by the Arverne city in the Allier valley, north of a Mariol-Bègues line. K. Gruel and D. Lallemand, Gallic coins and archeology of the territory in Auvergne, Essays in honor of Simone Scheers, pages 155-171.
