Historical background

SCOTLAND - KINGDOM OF SCOTLAND - JACQUES VI OR JAMES VI

(1567-03/27/1625)

James I of England was born in Edinburgh on June 19, 1566. He is the son of Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland. In 1567, when he was only one year old, he was proclaimed King of Scotland under the name of James VI by nobles who revolted against his mother, who was eventually executed in 1587. In 1603, he succeeded Elizabeth I, his cousin the Queen of England, thus ensuring the union of Scotland and England. Inclined to absolutism, his reign was marked by vigorous parliamentary opposition. He married Anne of Denmark. From this union was born Charles I who succeeded his deceased father in Theobalds Park (Hertfordshire) on March 27, 1625.
