Historical background

EBURONES (Currently Belgium)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Eburones, people of Belgian Gaul perhaps of Germanic origin, occupied the region north of the Ardennes, in the basin of the Meuse and as far as the Rhine (Cologne). They had for neighbors the Nervians, the Atuatuci, the Treveri and the Remi. Their oppidum was Atuatuca, proof of an alliance or occupation by the Atuatuques. The Eburones were the clients of the Treveri. Caesar was forced to exterminate them in 53 BC when a revolt broke out in Trevire country under the leadership of Ambiorix. Caesar (BG. II, 4; IV, 6; V, 24, 28, 29, 39, 47, 58; VI, 5, 31, 32, 32, 34, 35). Livy (Ep. 106). Strabo (G. IV, 3).
