Historical background

DUCHY OF GUELDERS - CHARLES OF EGMOND

(1492-1538)

Charles d'Egmont (1467-1538) is Duke of Guelders. He belongs to the large Egmont family which played a major role in the history of the Netherlands in the 14th and 15th centuries. Charles had to fight against the pretensions of Maximilian of Austria, then of Charles V. On the death of Charles of Egmont, the Duchy of Guelders was incorporated into the Spanish Netherlands. Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, son of René II and Philippa of Guelders, demanded the restitution of the duchy in his favor, on the head of his mother. Charles V evaded the question and did not return the duchy.
