Historical background

DAUPHINÉ - FRANCIS II, DAUPHIN

(19/1/1544-5/12/1560)

François II is the eldest son of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis. he married in 1558 Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland and became king in 1559 following the accidental death of his father. He gave up all his power to his wife's Lorraine uncles, François, Duke of Guise and Charles, Duke of Lorraine. This provoked opposition from the Protestant leaders Antoine de Bourbon, the Prince de Condé and the Colignys and led to the Conspiracy of Amboise in which they planned to kidnap the king. The king died in 1560 leaving no posterity.
