DAUPHINÉ - BISHOP OF VALENCE - ANONYMOUS COINAGE

(late 11th - 13th century)

A text from 1145 indicates that the towns of Valence and Die minted coins. In 1178, Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190) confirms the monetary privilege of Valence to Eudes de Chaponnay (1156-1186). This privilege is again confirmed under Bishop Guillaume de Savoie (1227-1239), by Frédéric II de Hohenstaufen (1197-1250). The bishoprics of Valence and Die were united in 1276 by decision of Pope Gregory X (1271-1276). The bishops began to sign their coins from Jean de Genève (1283-1298).
