Historical background

COUNTY OF HANAU-LICHTENBERG - PHILIP V

(1590-1599)

The right to mint coins was granted to the Counts of Hanau in 1368, but the first coins were not minted until 1587 in the workshop of Wœrth-sur-Sauer. Jean René opened a second mint in Babenhausen. These two workshops were destroyed in 1632. Philippe V is the son of Philippe IV who died in 1590. It is not always easy to attribute to Philippe IV or Philippe V the coins of Hanau-Lichtenberg which do not bear a year.
