Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin II César à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*1).
Obverse translation : "Constantinus Iunior Nobilissimus Cæsar", (Constantin le jeune très noble césar).

Reverse description : Porte de camp surmontée de deux tourelles ; au dessus, une étoile.

Commentary


Poids très léger. Avecl’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges fines et tombantes visibles de chaque côté. Six rangs verticaux de pierres au revers dans la porte (petit appareil). Étoile à huit rais. Seulement sept exemplaires recensés. Semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
