Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire sur flan large et ovale bien centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles. Portrait de toute beauté avec une petite faiblesse de frappe dans une partie de la légende. Revers de haut relief, bien venu à la frappe, finement détaillé. Belle patine grise avec reflets dorés. Conserve la plus grande partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche, tenant un sceptre transversal de la main droite et un bouclier de la main gauche (F*).

Reverse legend : PRINCIPI IV-VE-NTVTIS/ -|*// PLN.
Reverse description : Constantin lauré, vêtu militairement debout à gauche, tenant dans chaque main une enseigne militaire.
Reverse translation : “Principi Iuventutis” (Au prince de la jeunesse).

Commentary


Avec l’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Rubans de type 3. Grande égide posée sur la cuirasse lisse. Bouclier orné de peau de bête. Cet exemplaire est illustré dans le nouvel ouvrage de référence, consacré à l’atelier de Londres, H. J. Cloke & L. Toone, The London mint of Constantius and Constantine, Londres, 2015, p. 184-185, n° 7.06.020 et note. C’est l’unique exemplaire recensé.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
