Obverse description : Buste casqué et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite avec pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (C*01).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin Auguste).

Reverse legend : VIRTVS - EXERCIT/ VOT/ XX// TT.
Reverse description : Labarum entre deux captifs assis dos à dos ; le captif de gauche a les mains attachées dans le dos et celui de droite retourne la tête.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Exercitus/ Votis Vicennalibus”, (La Virilité de l'Armée/ Vœux pour le vingtième anniversaire de règne).

Casque décoré avec le couvre nuque orné d’une croisette cantonnée de quatre globules (globe). Visière décorée. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges fines.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
