Obverse description : Tête diadémée de Constantin Ier à droite (O’a) ; diadème perlé (double rang).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : VIRTV-S AVGG/ S|F// ARLS.
Reverse description : Porte de camp surmontée de quatre tourelles et d'une étoile.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Augustorum”, (La Virilité des augustes).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Avec l’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Rubans perlés de type 2 aux extrémités bouletées. Six rangs verticaux de pierres au revers. Tourelles pointées. Étoile à huit rais. Linteaux de porte ornés de cinq globules (2/2/1). Les lettres S-F peuvent se développer par “Sæculi Felicitas” (la Félicité du siècle). C’est la première apparition du diadème pour le monnayage de billon.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
