Commentary

Hybride.
Hybrid. Very light weight. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Appears to be completely unpublished and unlisted. Missing from all consulted works. Appears to be extremely rare. We are in the presence of a hybrid combining a right reserved for a Caesar, in this case, Constantine II with a reverse specific to an Augustus, here Constantine I. Often these coins are classified as imitations. The portrait and the legend on the right leave no doubt, we are dealing with an official issue. We have proposed a hybrid for the second officina (ST) associated with a unique consular bust of Constantine II (COINS 43, no. 911)

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
