Obverse description : Buste de Constantin II lauré, drapé et cuirassé à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*1).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Iunior Nobilissimus Cæsar”, (Constantin jeune très noble césar).

Reverse legend : PROVIDEN - TIAE CAESS/ .//SMANTI.
Reverse description : Porte de camp, sans battants, surmontée de deux tours entre lesquelles se trouve une étoile.
Reverse translation : “Providentiæ Cæsarum”, (La Providence des césars).

Commentary


Poids léger. Avec son argenture superficielle. Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum visibles des deux côtés. Au revers, onze rangs verticaux de pierres (non signalé au RIC). Tourelles pointées. Étoile à huit rais.
Lightweight. With its surface silver plating. Type 3 ribbons. Thin pteryges under the paludamentum visible on both sides. On the reverse, eleven vertical rows of stones (not reported in the RIC). Pointed turrets. Eight-pointed star

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
