Commentary

Type 3 ribbons with pellet-shaped ends. The right hand is raised in the attitude of Adlocutio (harrangue) or Adventus (greeting upon arrival). P. Bastien recorded only two examples of this type of bust (J*) for the period. Same obverse die as the examples in the Berlin and Vienna museums (B. 136 a and b, pl. VIII). On the reverse, the letters in the field C|R could be the initials of “Claritas Reipublicæ” for the splendor of the Republic. The globe appears to be decorated with a small cross flanked by four globules, as on the obverse. This is the third published example. Not in the collection of the Cabinet des Médailles at the BnF. Will be numbered 136c in Supplement III of Bastien's work.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
