Commentary

Poids léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges larges vues des deux côtés. Buste inhabituel pour Constantin II. Semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.
Lightweight. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Wide pteryges seen from both sides. Unusual bust for Constantine II. Appears rarer than general works suggest.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
