Obverse description : Buste mi-corps lauré de Constantin Ier, la cuirassé décorée d’une tête de Méduse, tenant une lance de la main droite et un bouclier de la main gauche.
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI/ S|F// SARL.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à droite, tournée à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Buste extraordinaire. C’est l’une des monnaies les plus rares du règne de Constantin Ier frappée à Arles. Un seul exemplaire est connu, conservé au musée d’Arles. C’est le second exemplaire recensé et le seul disponible sur le marché !.
An extraordinary bust. This is one of the rarest coins from the reign of Constantine I minted in Arles. Only one example is known, preserved at the Arles Museum. It is the second example recorded and the only one available on the market!

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
