Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’b) ; diadème lauré et gemmé.
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Maximus Augustus”, (Constantin le Grand auguste).

Reverse legend : CONSTANTINI-ANA DAFNE/ B|-// CONS.
Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) assise à droite sur un cippe tournée à gauche, tournant la tête à droite, tenant une palme de la main gauche ; devant elle à gauche, un trophée et un captif agenouillé à gauche sur lequel elle pose son pied droit ; au-dessous, un bouclier.
Reverse translation : “Constantiniana Dafnæ”, (La forteresse constantinienne).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Diadème lauré avec cabochons gemmés carrés. Les ptéryges ne sont pas visibles sous le paludamentum.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
