Obverse description : Buste lauré, casqué et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (C*01).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP/ VOT/ PR/-|-// TARL.
Reverse description : Deux Victoires debout, face à face, posant un bouclier sur un cippe.
Reverse translation : “Victoriæ Lætæ Principium Perpetuæ/ Vota Populi Romani”, (À la victoire heureuse et durable du prince/ Vœux du Peuple romain).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Casque et visière lisses. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges fines. Cippe orné d’un losange lisse cantonné de quatre globules. Ce type n’est pas repris dans l’ouvrage de Georges Depeyrot et devrait trouver sa place après le 22/1.
Very light weight. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Smooth helmet and visor. Studded breastplate and shoulder guard. Thin pteryges. Cippus decorated with a smooth lozenge surrounded by four globules. This type is not included in Georges Depeyrot's work and should find its place after 22/1

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
