Historical background

GENERAL, DEPARTEMENTAL OR MUNICIPAL COUNCIL - ADVISORS

from 1789

In France, the departmental council is the deliberative assembly of a department, elected by universal suffrage within the framework of the cantons. Before the renewal of the departmental assemblies of March 2015, this body bore the name of general council. The law of December 22, 1789 prescribes the creation in each department of an assembly composed of 36 elected members: the department council. This was abolished by the law of 14 Frimaire Year II (December 4, 1793). It was re-established under the name of “general council of the department” by the law of 28 Pluviôse year VIII (February 17, 1800).
