Historical background

COMTAT-VENAISSIN - CLEMENT VIII (Ippolito Aldobrandini)

(01/30/1592-03/03/1605)

Clement VIII was elected pope at the age of 46 and published the Vulgate begun by Sixtus V. After the conversion of Henri IV and his return to the Catholic faith ("Paris is well worth a mass") in 1594, the pope lifted the excommunication which weighed on him and tried to rebuild the union of Christian princes against Protestantism but he died in 1605.
