Commodus succeeded his father Marc Aurèle, who died in Vienna on March 17, 180. He hastened to conclude a truce with the Germanic tribes and then abandoned public life. The Empire was successively governed by the prefects of the Praetorium, Perennis from 182 to 185, Cléandre from 185 to 190, who were both assassinated.
