Historical background

COLCHIS - DIOSKOUROS

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Colchis was a mythical region located on the southeast coast of the Black Sea. The Argonauts went there to seize the Golden Fleece. Dioscurias was founded in the 6th century BC by Milesian settlers. The city took the name of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), eponymous heroes of the city. It was integrated into the great kingdom of Pontus. It is in the city that Mithridates VI of Pontus found refuge at the end of his reign in 66-65 BC. The city was then integrated into the kingdom of Pontus by Marc Antoine for Polemon Ier.
