Historical background

CLAUDIUS AND ANTONIA

(40-41)

Antonia was the youngest daughter of Marc Antoine and Octavie, the niece of Augustus, the wife of Drusus Senior, the mother of Germanicus and Claudius, the sister-in-law of Tiberius. She died under the reign of Caligula, her grandson, perhaps poisoned at the end of the year 37. It was she who, in 29, had revealed the sedition of Sejanus to Tiberius. Claude minted an important coinage recalling the memory of this woman who nevertheless did not love this ungraceful son, who became emperor by chance.
