Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et irrégulier, échancré à 7 heures au droit sur la légende. Buste exceptionnel de Claude II. Frappe molle au revers

Obverse description : buste radié et cuirassé à gauche, tenant un sceptre de la main droite reposant sur l’épaule e tun bouclier de la main gauche (F).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Claudius Augustus”, (L’empereur Claude auguste).

Reverse legend : PROVIDENT AVG/ -|XII/ -.
Reverse description : Providentia (la Providence) drapée, debout de face, regardant à gauche, tenant une baguette de la main droite et une corne d’abondance de la gauche et s’appuyant sur une colonne ; à ses pieds, à droite, un globe.
Reverse translation : “Providentia Augusti”, (La Providence de l’auguste).
Commentary
Poids léger. Rubans de type 3. Buste armé tous à fait exceptionnel pour le règne de Claude II. C’est le troisième exemplaire recensé. Le bouclier ne semble pas orné d’une tête de Méduse. Semble de même coin de droit que l’exemplaire de Goeblingen n° 2188 corr.

Claude II is appointed Master of the Cavalry after the defection of Auréolus and is part of the plot which eliminates Gallien. Having promised Auréolus his life after the death of Gallienus, he nevertheless lets his troops massacre him after the surrender of Milan. Claudius II wins a brilliant victory over the Goths at Naissus, in Upper Moesia. Unfortunately, the vanquished spread the plague among the victors and Claude fell victim to it. He is deified after his death and an important restitution coinage is minted by Aurelian first in 270, then by Constantine I, who claimed to be descended from Claudius II, at the beginning of the 4th century..
