Commentary

Dans son corpus sur Lyon, J.-B. Giard a relevé douze exemplaires avec onze coins de droit et onze coins de revers. C’est néanmoins un monnayage rare et dynastique, frappé au moment de l’adoption de Néron comme César.
In his corpus on Lyon, J.-B. Giard noted twelve examples with eleven obverse dies and eleven reverse dies. It is nevertheless a rare and dynastic coinage, struck at the time of Nero's adoption as Caesar

Historical background

CLAUDIUS AND AGRIPPINA THE YOUNGER

(50-54)

Agrippina (15-59) is the daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, sister of Caligula. She married Domitius Ahenobarbus, from whom she gave birth to Nero in 37. After marrying her uncle in 50, she managed to have her son adopted by her husband, who became Caesar. All that remains for Agrippina, to ensure power for her offspring, is to get rid of the husband who has become a nuisance. Claude is poisoned, Britannicus dismissed and Nero succeeds Claude. Agrippina is then closely associated with power. This presence having become too pressing, Nero finally agreed to kill his mother in 59.
