Historical background

CHINA - TE-TSUNG

(1875-1908)

Tseu Hi (1835-1908) is the main character in the history of China between 1861 and 1908. Wife of Wen Tsung (1851-1861), she chooses, after the death of her son Mu Tsung (1862-1875), Te Tsung, his nephew, to succeed him. Meanwhile, the Western powers are preparing the territorial and political dismemberment of China. The boxer movement (1898-1901) aimed to drive out Europeans. After the siege of the legations in Beijing in 1900, with the Empress's consent, sedition was drowned in blood. Te Tsung and the Empress die under mysterious conditions within days of each other. Tseu Hi's little nephew succeeds him, he is three years old, his name is Pou Yi: he is the last Manchu emperor (1908-1911).
