Historical background

(Since 1818)

Independent since 1818, Chile is under the authority of Bernardo O'Higgins. It initiates reforms, which cause discontent of the aristocracy and forced him to abdicate in 1823. For ten years, Chile is subject to a series of reforms that attempt to give an organization the country. After a series of victories preservatives, begins a period of stability with the revolution of 1829. It is called conservative Republic. With the Constitution of 1833, the minister Diego Portales becomes the main protagonist of the organization of the country until 1861. After thirty years of Conservative government, the Liberals took power. At this time, economic growth increases significantly due to the exploitation of saltpeter in the region of Antofagasta. This wealth causes anger and jealousy of Bolivia who claims ownership of the territory. Despite the signing of several treaties in 1866 and 1871, countries fail to agree and 14 February 1879 Chile declares war on Bolivia, which has previously signed a secret pact with Peru in conflict with Chile. This is the beginning of the Pacific War. It ends with the Battle of Huamachuco 10 July 1883 and the victory of Chile.
