Historical background

Chersonesus Taurica - Panticapaeum

(Fourth-first century BC)

Founded in the sixth century BC, Panticapaeum (Kerch) was a colony of Miletus, located west of the Cimmerian Bosporus. The head of the satyr Pan adorns rights and is a pun on the name of the city according to the legend In fact, it is Silene. Before calling Panticapaeum, the city would have brought the name Apollonia. Mint sometimes presents homotypies with mint Apollonia Pontica. Region Panticapaeum was famous for its huge gold reserves immortalized by Herodotus (III, 116).
