Commentary

The denarii minted at Verdun under Charles II, known as “the Bald,” are rare. However, there are many variations of the legend. We attribute this example to the reign of Charles III, known as “the Simple,” because of its type and its particularly degenerate legends. The legend of the right REICIVIA may result from a degeneration of the legend GRATIA DEI REX.

Historical background

CHARLES THE SIMPLE AND COINAGE IN HIS NAME

(898-923) and 10th century

Charles III dit le Simple, posthumous son of Louis le Bègue, was born on November 17, 879. After the death of his older brothers, Louis III and Carloman, he was forgotten in the succession. In 888, after the deposition of Charles the Fat, he opposed the Robertian king Eudes and was crowned king in Reims on January 28, 893 by Archbishop Foulques. Eudes, shortly before his death (January 898), gave him his powers. His campaigns in Lorraine were disastrous and after being dethroned in 922, he became the captive of Herbert de Vermandois. On December 7, 929, he died in captivity at Péronne.
