Commentary


Monnaie hybride rarissime avec le nom de Charles au droit et avec le monogramme de Pépin II, roi d’Aquitaine (839-865) au revers. Il s’agit du denier illustré dans l’ouvrage de Georges Depeyrot sur les monnaies carolingiennes repris sur l’article de Simon Coupland et de Jean Moesgaard publié en 2015. Six exemplaires de ce denier hybride ont été recensés par ces auteurs.
Extremely rare hybrid coin with the name of Charles on the obverse and the monogram of Pepin II, King of Aquitaine (839-865) on the reverse. This is the denarius illustrated in Georges Depeyrot's work on Carolingian coins, reprinted from the article by Simon Coupland and Jean Moesgaard published in 2015. Six examples of this hybrid denarius were identified by these authors.

CHARLES II LE CHAUVE / THE BALD

(20/06/840-6/10/877)

Charles the Bald became king on the death of his father, Louis the Pious, on June 20, 840. At the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Carolingian empire was shared between Louis' three sons. Lothair receives Lotharingia, Louis the German, Francia Orientalis and Charles Francia Occidentalis. The type with the Christian legend predates 864 and the reform of the Edict of Pîtres, but it must be later than 843. It may have been struck between 850 and 860.
