Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - TROYES - SAINT-ÉTIENNE

The collegiate church of Saint-Étienne de Troyes was founded in 1147 by Henri I, whose uncle was Étienne de Blois. It is adjacent to the count's palace. Richly endowed, the collegiate church owns many properties and benefits from the Champagne fairs. It was built between 1157 and around 1174 and includes the tomb of Henry I and his son Thibaud III. This collegiate church was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century.
