Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - BRANCHES AND MEANING

(Eleventh century)

Provins belonged to the Count of Champagne and the diocese of Sens. Since 1019, the county of Champagne is in the hands of the house of Blois. Stephen II (1037-1048) and Eudes II of Champagne (1048-1063) succeeded to Eudes I (1019-1037) who was also Count of Blois and Chartres. Coinage developed due to the birth of the Champagne fairs.
