Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - COUNTY OF SENS - RENAUD II

(1012-1052)

The feudal coinage of Sens needs to be completely redated thanks to the work of F. Dumas on the treasure of Fécamp (DyI.137). The coinage of Sens could have inspired that of Auxerre and not the contrary. It would begin in the first quarter of the 10th century by the counts Fromond (941-951) and Renaud le Vieux (951-991). The count was often in conflict with the archbishop; this is the case of Renaud I with Archembaud (959-968) and especially with his successor Seguin (977-999). Renaud II undermined the episcopal authority at the beginning of his reign. Robert II the Pious (996-1031) supported the bishop against the count and in 1015 confiscated the county. Henry I minted there and on the death of Renaud II in 1055, the county was attached to the kingdom. Sens, in terms of ecclesiastical hierarchy, had precedence over Paris until the 17th century.
