CHAMPAGNE - ARCHBISHOP OF REIMS - GUILLAUME / WILLIAM IER DIT "AUX BLANCHES MAINS"

(1176-1202)

Son of Thibaut III, Count of Champagne, Bishop of Chartres and Sens, he was elected Archbishop of Champagne in 1176. At the Lateran Council, Pope Alexander III ordained him cardinal, allowing him to crown the kings of France. In 1179, Louis VII crowned his son, Philippe, and Guillaume was made duke and peer of France. In 1183, the king of France Philippe-Auguste appointed him minister, before he was appointed regent of the kingdom following the departure of the king for the Holy Land. He died in 1202.
