Historical background

CARUS AND CARINUS

Carus, who became august in August 283, quickly associated his sons Carin and Numérien with power. From the month of October, he appointed Carin César with responsibility for the West, while himself and Numérien reserved the East for themselves. From the month of December 282, Numerian is associated with power, like Caesar. The two brothers were named augusts in March 283, when the Emperor began a brilliant campaign against the Sassanids. He received the title of "Persicus Maximus", but was struck down near Ctesiphon in mid-July 283. Carinus and Numerian remained alone.
