Historical background

DECAY - Knidos

(Fifth century BC)

Cnidus was a very old city, a major economic center, political and cultural. In 476 BC, she entered the Delian league attico-and remained there until 412 BC, after the Athenian defeat in Sicily. The coinage of Cnidus seems back in the early fourth century. This is off Cnidus in 394 BC that the Athenian Conon, assisted by the satrap Pharnabaze, won a great naval victory over the Spartan fleet of Lysander. Aphrodite, who was venerated at Knidos, is supposed to have been the inspiration for Conon. 350 BC, Praxiteles executed at the request of Cnidians a statue of Aphrodite appears on the coinage until the Hellenistic period, specifically to the battle of Magnesia in 189 BC.
