Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type monétaire sur un flan ovale, court sur les légendes. Portrait de Caracalla tout à fait fantastique. Revers de haut relief finement détaillé. Très jolie patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets mordorés et bleutés acier. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Commentary


Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire reproduit dans l’ouvrage de K. et M. Prieur (Prieur 236, p. 42, CP. 868). Buste cuirassé et lauré de Caracalla barbu à droite, l’un des rubans de la couronne de laurier passant sur l’épaule, vu de trois-quarts de face.
Les bustes cuirassés non drapés sont très rares dans la série des tétradrachmes syro-phéniciens de Caracalla
Dans la base TSP que maintenait Michel Prieur, dix-huit exemplaires sont répertoriés, tous du même graveur, dont en musées Berlin, Paris (5) et ANS (2).

Augustus

After Geta's assassination, Caracalla decreed the "damnatio memoriæ" of his brother. The "Constitution Antoniniana" was promulgated in 212. All the inhabitants of the Empire became Roman citizens. The following year he undertook a campaign in Germania and won numerous victories over the Germans, Iapyges and Goths. He received the title of "Germanicus". The end of the reign was marked in 215 by the Monetary Reform and the creation of the Antoninianus. Caracalla begins a final campaign against the Parthians. He is assassinated after having celebrated his vicennalia.
