Historical background

CAMPANIA - HOLD

(Third century BC)

Cales (Calvi), a few kilometers north of Capua, in the region of Caserta was the ancient city of Aurunci and capital Ausoni. It was a Latin colony of Roman citizens established in 2500 Campania from 334 BC (Livy VIII, 16, 13-14). It was the center of Roman rule in Campania. The city rebelled against the authority of Rome during the Second Punic War in 209 BC and was severely punished. The following two centuries, the city played an economic role thanks to its large production of ceramic vases "caleni".
