Reverse description : Taras, coiffé d’une couronne feuillue nu, debout de face, chevauchant un dauphin à gauche, tenant un trident de la main droite reposant sur son épaule et un pan de sa chlamyde de la main gauche ; sous le dauphin, les flots (non visibles ici).

Autonomy - second alliance with the Romans (235-228 avant J.-C.)

In 272 BC, Taranto surrendered after a long siege, the consul Lucius Papirius Cursor. After the departure of Pyrrhus, Taranto submitted to Rome. Under the leadership of Consul Spurius Carvilius Maximus, Taranto, an ally of Rome at first, eventually rallied to Hannibal in 213 BC The Roman garrison, a refugee on the acropolis of Taranto, resisted for five years. The city was finally submitted by Fabius Maximus in 209 BC which reduced most of the population into slavery, thirty thousand people according to Livy (XXVI, 39).
