(1186-1196)

Ivan Asien I (or Asên), emperor (tsar) reigned from 1189 to 1196 over Bulgaria. He shared power with his brother Pierre IV who succeeded him. He revolted against the Byzantine yoke of Isaac II Angel in 1186. He made Vidin his capital. He died assassinated. His son Asien II was Tsar of the Bulgarians from 1218 to 1241..
