Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - CONAN II

(1040/8-1066)

Conan II is the son of Alain III (1008-1040) who died of poisoning. Duke at three months, he was in fact a prisoner of his uncle Eudon de Penthièvre (1040-1060-1079). Conan was delivered by the Breton barons in 1048. Having come of age in 1057 and supported by Hoël, Count of Nantes and Cornwall, he attacked Eudon. He renounced the duchy in 1062 and kept only the county of Penthièvre until his death in 1079. Conan died in turn, poisoned, in 1066. His brother-in-law and ally, Hoël II, count of Nantes and Cornwall, succeeds him.
