Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - ANNE OF BRITTANY

(1488-1491) and (1498-1499)

Anne was born on January 26, 1477. In 1486, the States of Rennes declared her heiress of the duchy and she was recognized as a duchess in 1488. After refusing to marry the Sire d'Albret in 1489, she married by proxy to the King of the Romans , Maximilian, marking the resumption of hostilities with France. Nantes was delivered to the French and Rennes was besieged in 1491. On December 6, 1491, under pressure from the French, she consented to marry the King of France Charles VIII and obtained the maintenance of the privileges of Brittany. On the death of Charles VIII, in 1498, she returned to her duchy where she married the King of France Louis XII on January 7, 1499. On January 9, 1514 she died Queen of France.
