Commentary

Ce triens présente une croix non cantonnée au revers et une tête à droite bien gravées. Type absent de l’ouvrage de Belfort recensant pourtant plusieurs monnaies de Briennois (Belfort n° 933-936).
This triens has a cross without a quartering on the reverse and a head on the right, both well engraved. This type is absent from the Belfort work, which nevertheless lists several Briennois coins (Belfort no. 933-936).

Historical background

BRIENNOIS (BRIENNO PAGUS and VICUS)

(7th - 8th century)

The Briennois is a French region around Brienne-le-Château in Aube. Crossed by the Aube, this micro-region belonging to the humid Champagne region is delimited to the south-west by the Regional Natural Park of the Orient Forest and its lakes as well as to the north-east by the Soulaines forest. The region is known for its half-timbered churches. The site is probably already occupied by the Gauls and its name seems to be derived from the Celtic briavenna which designates a set of pontoons in connection with the seniority of the port activity of Brienne-la-Vieille. Its castle was destroyed by the Normans in 951..
