Jean Ier dit le Victorieux is the second son of Henri III, Duke of Brabant (1248-1261). He succeeded his brother Henri IV in 1268. His other brother, Godefroy, was killed at the Battle of Courtrai in 1302. Jean I was also Duke of Limbourg. His son, John II, succeeded him in 1294.
