Commentary

“La légende du revers rappelle que, en 1458, l’évêque de Coutances répondant pour le roi à Maître l’Orfèvre, ambassadeur du duc de Bourgogne, qui avait plaidé pour le duc d’Alençon, dit : C’est par la justice que règnent les rois, et n’étoit la bonne justice des rois et des princes, les royaumes et les seigneuries ne seraient plus que larronneries”.
“The legend on the reverse recalls that, in 1458, the Bishop of Coutances, responding for the king to Master the Goldsmith, ambassador of the Duke of Burgundy, who had pleaded for the Duke of Alençon, said: It is by justice that kings reign, and were it not for the good justice of kings and princes, kingdoms and lordships would be nothing more than thievery.”
