Historical background

BURGUNDY - DUCHY OF BURGUNDY - HUGH IV

(1218-1278)

Hugues IV (1212-1278) succeeds his father Eudes III (1193-1218). In 1239, he left for the Holy Land and lived there for two years. He accompanied Saint-Louis during the Sixth Crusade in Egypt and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Mansourah in 1250. After paying a very large ransom, he returned to France. In 1255 and not in 1239, he exchanged the counties of Chalon and Auxonne against part of the seigneury of Salin. In 1265, it was invested by Baudoin of Constantinople with the kingdom of Thessaloniki. On his death, his son Robert succeeded him (1272-1305).
